Olympus, Nikon Raise Profit Forecasts on Yen, Camera Sales
Feb. 5 (Bloomberg) -- Olympus Corp. and Nikon Corp., two of the world's five largest digital camera makers, raised their profit forecasts for this fiscal year as a weaker yen helps spur sales of photography equipment. Olympus, the industry's fourth-largest producer, increased its target today after net income in the quarter ended Dec. 31 jumped 80 percent to 21.7 billion yen ($180 million). Nikon, the fifth-largest, increased its earnings goal after profit rose 59 percent to 23 billion yen. A weaker yen helped boost the value of sales at the two Tokyo-based companies, offsetting camera price declines and increased competition from Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. and Sony Corp. Japanese camera makers will increase global shipments 7.5 percent this year to a record 84.9 million units, according to Tokyo-based Camera and Image Products Association.
Tant: Web site showcases 'movement memories'
"A picture is worth a thousand words," says an old proverb. As a small-town writer chasing big-time stories, I try to provide the words, and now my new Web site, edtant.com, will display some of the photographs I've taken at protest marches and rallies in Washington, New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Atlanta and here in Athens over a span of more than three decades. My knowledge of computers is about as extensive as my knowledge of brain surgery. This column is written with the aid of Tina the typewriter, not HAL the computer. Still, when a cyber-savvy old friend offered to create a Web site for me as a Christmas gift, it was an offer I couldn't refuse. As an activist and a participatory journalist, I've been attending street demonstrations large and small since 1968, and I began my first forays into photography of social movements in 1976 at the colorful People's Bicentennial that took place in Washington as this nation celebrated its 200th birthday.
Skype Coming To PSP? Shut Yo Mouth
Has anyone delved into the PSP's firmware updates snooping around for hidden treasures? We haven't, but Quick Jump has. According to QJ, if you look into the decrypted version of vshmain.prx from Firmware 3.10, you may be led to believe that some form of VoIP functionality will show up in the future. All signs point to Skype at the moment as the provider. Checking the dump, there was no actual PRX by that name which means that the actual functionality is still being worked upon at this stage. And I don't think anyone's bluffing either. There have already been cases of Camera, GPS, and POPS PRXes being in the firmware long before the functionality was opened up. In the case of Camera and GPS, references can be found as far back as Firmware 2.70. POPS references were found in Firmware 2.80 dumps.
